Android M is now officially called 6.0 Marshmallow

Android M is now officially called Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Google's new mascot is now welcoming photographers near the Android HQ building in California.

Android M was unveiled during Google's annual I/O conference last May and is expected to become publicly available this fall. The next major Android version will be trying to optimize the performance even further by lowering the RAM usage, improving the standby and overall battery endurance.

Android M will also introduce native support for fingerprint sensors and security authentications. An official app permission manager is coming too, as well as support for USB Type-C connectors and capability for charging other devices.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow new Developer's Preview is now available on Nexus 5, 6, 9 and the Nexus Player. The preview will be the last one before the RTM version.

The official SDK is live as well. The devs can now upload their Android 6.0 compatible apps to the Play Store.

Marshmallow should make it first on the Nexus devices this fall.

Android M to be named Marshmallow, Googlers Nat and Lo suggest

Ever since Google announced Android M back in May, two of the most intriguing questions, if by far not the most important ones, have been what exactly version number the new OS will carry and what the M will stand for.

The general consesus on the first point is that Android M will only bump the digits to 5.2, but the next version candy remains a mystery. Among the myriad of options, so far Milkshake, Muffin and Marshmallow have emerged as favorites, and this new insider video on YouTube points to the latter. Now, when we say "insider" we mean Google employees Nat and Lo, who in their own words aren't familiar with everything that goes on at the tech giant (as if Larry page himself is).

Anyhow, the two ladies have come up with a short song, titled "What's M gonna be?", which lists a whole bunch of naming possibilities. Musical qualities aside, the video ends with a guy sandblasting/painting a white half-droid, which looks suspiciously like a marshmallow.

You don't need us to tell you, but we will anyway, that the video may very well be a ploy to throw us in the wrong direction. So don't be surprised if come announcement date the same white half-droid shows up on stage, only to have a muffin come out of it.

Leaked Samsung docs show Galaxy S7 testing with Snapdragon 820 and Android M!

Remember the rumors that Samsung is testing the next Galaxy S7 with Qualcomm chipsets, as well as with its own custom Exynos chippery? Well, according to a report from a well-versed industry insider who posted some leaked docs on their Weibo account, Samsung is indeed toying around with a Snapdragon 820 variation of the S7.

Codenamed "Jungfrau," the Galaxy S7 might see a month or two faster development schedule than the Galaxy S6, courtesy of an improved project management process, dubbed "Agile." This could very well jibe with the previous rumors that Galaxy S7 will be ready in the second half of the year, though it might not exactly hit the shelves in time for Christmas, but rather be announced earlier than usual when 2016 hits.

In any case, turning back to the leaked Samsung docs below, these are for the internal Android M upgrade schedule, and on one we can clearly see the codename Jungfrau used along with the "hero" device notation, while on the other the Galaxy S7 Jungfrau is listed with a Qualcomm MSM8996 version, which is the internal codename of none other but Snapdragon 820. In a nutshell, Samsung might indeed be testing Galaxy S7 with both a new Exynos, and the upcoming Snapdragon scorcher, while the Android M update work has obviously been greenlit, too, so we might indeed witness a sped-up development scenario for Samsung's next flagship.
