Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 will be up to twice as powerful and energy efficient as its predecessor

In a dedicated blog post, Qualcomm announced that the upcoming Snapdragon 820 chipset will be up to twice as powerful and energy efficient as its predecessor, Snapdragon 810. The San Diego-based chipmaker has developed the SoC specifically with high-end, ultra-thin devices in mind.
Snapdragon 820 has its cores designed for heterogenous computing. The process allows the chipset combine various cores such as CPU, GPU, and DSP to perform a task, instead of using a single core for it.
The quad-core Kryo CPU with 64-bit architecture found in the Snapdragon 820 has been integrated tightly with the Adreno 530 GPU and the Hexagon 680 DSP of the chipset. The Kryo processor has been manufactured via 14nm FinFET process, so it promises to go easy on the battery as well.
In short, Snapdragon 820 promises to be a much more stellar proposition than its controversial predecessor. Qualcomm has been quite keen on stirring up hype around the component, so expectations towards it will surely be high when it debuts in a device.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 specs won't be released August 11th as rumored

Last week, we told you that Qualcomm would be releasing the technical specifications of the Snapdragon 820 chipset on August 11th. With all of the fear about overheating that has engulfed the Snapdragon 810, many smartphone manufacturers and users will be happy to move the conversation over to the next high-end Qualcomm SoC. Analyst Pan Jiutang has said that the chip will start shipping in December and will make its debut inside the Xiaomi Mi 5 next March.

If you were really looking forward to hearing about the Snapdragon 820 SoC on Tuesday, we have some bad news. The event taking place in Los Angeles on Tuesday is actually the SIGGRAPH 2015 conference that deals with computer graphics. Qualcomm is going to attend. Somehow, this got mixed up into meaning that the Snapdragon 820 would have its specs unveiled on Tuesday.

Those excited to see how the Snapdragon 820 benchmarks, might have seen a good example of what Qualcomm is bringing to the table. A mystery Samsung device was put through the AnTuTu benchmark test and scored an amazing 95,972. While there is no confirmation, this might have been the Samsung Galaxy S7 with the Snapdragon 820 inside. There has been talk that Samsung would be returning to Qualcomm for the Galaxy S7.

Reportedly, manufacturers like LG, HTC and Sony have already received samples of the Snapdragon 820. Besides Xiaomi, the three are considered to be among the smartphone makers who will be early to market with a Snapdragon 820 powered handset.
